Canal Splash Tour, Weedsport, Port Byron, and Montezuma
As part of the statewide Canal Splash event, join the MHS on a day-long celebration of the Erie Canal sponsored jointly with Old Brutus Historical Society in Weedsport and the Lock 52 Historical Society in Port Byron. We will follow the Erie Canal westward through Cayuga County following water through the three canal villages. As we go, we will learn about the first canal, the original Erie Canal and its replacement, the Enlarged Erie. We will also learn about the canal-side businesses, a murder, the largest grain mill in the state (in 1830) and even a little about the Montezuma Swamps. The tour is structured so it can be done alone or join one of two guided tours. One tour will begin at Lock 51 at the eastern end of the county and the other tour will begin in Montezuma. Both tours will stop at the same places and consist of the Enlarged Lock 51, the Old Brutus Historical Society Museum, Centerport Aqueduct and walking tours in Port Byron and Montezuma. Both walking tours are about 1.6 miles and are structured so that you can pick and choose what stops you want to see. If you want to go on your own, there will be volunteers at all the stops to aide you. Both walking tours have self-guided tour books which will be available for purchase. Registration for guided tours is required. More more information with time schedules and details may be located at: http://canalsplashblogspot.com or contact Mike Riley at (315) 776-3070 or email: mriley@twcny.rr.com
